To tell the story of the Kangal Shira, I have to start in the
past.
My woman Mirja visited
a dog station in Istanbul in April 2003, to help the staff for some days
and fetch some animals which had already found new homes in Germany.
The dog station, which
is just one of many in Istanbul, depends almost totally on charities from
abroad.

After the first shock about the bad physical condition of the
crowds of animals, Mirja started to mix food, clean the area and feed
the pack. After three days she returned with 10 dogs that were already
distributed in Germany.

One year
before, we had got two dogs from this station ourselves (Sparky, a male
Kangal and Kimba, a mix) and depending on this aspect we had focussed our
interest on this place, called Beykoz Baranagi.
Originally, Sparky was sent to another family, but, after having
caused some problems in the local dog school, he came to us and we decided
to keep him. Our pack in included now four dogs, beside the two mentioned
above, our ‘senior’ Pedro an Leika, an old Golden-Retriever.
In the following time we made inquiries about the breed ‘Kangal’,
just to understand their behavior and have success in taming Sparky. Soon
in became obvious that it’s not always the easiest business to deal with
Kangals, but with patience and hard work at least possible!
